Opel GT
The Opel GT was a small sports car that was introduced in 1968 by Opel, a German possession of General Motors. Its styling was similar to classics like the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette. The original GT was only around for six years, but it created a massive fan base among car collectors. After 34 years of retirement, the GT returned in 2007, with a new body based on the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn SKY.
The original Opel GT was equipped with a base 1.1 L OHV straight-4 engine, which produced 67 hp (SAE) at 6000 rpm. A unique feature of the GT was its pop-up headlights. Manually operated by the driver, they both rotated in the same direction. Owners joked that you could spot a GT driver anywhere due to their massive arm muscles developed from using the pop-up headlight lever.
While it seated only two, the Opel GT had ample room for its passengers. There was a generous amount of room for even those over six feet tall! During 1968 to 1973, a total of 103,463 Opel GTs were sold. The first few hundred, which were hand assembled, are considered to be the most collectible.
1969 Aztec Gold Opel GT was featured in the opening scenes of the last season of television show Get Smart. It is also featured in the new 2008 feature film Get Smart starring Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway.
