My GM life
In April of 1973, I applied to a newspaper advertisement for a Journeymen Pipefitter for the GM Fisher Body plant in Livonia, Michigan. The plant was a cut and sew plant at that time, working two shifts of production and three shifts of maintenance. I worked second shift for three months and was then bumped to days!!! The reason was that they had a job to run 4" steam pipe over a driveway to an emergency water supply. The old timers didn't want to do the work 40 feet in the air, with trucks moving under them. I still drive by the old site and see my work 35 years later in full view.
Fast forward to 1990 - Spring Hill, Tennessee Saturn site. I was standing on the final assembly line the day Roger B. Smith drove the first Saturn off the line. I am in the photograph leaning in as the car moves forward (dressed in blazer).
