Allison Engineering Company
The Allison Engineering's roots go back to 1915, when the Allison Experimental Company was founded in Indianapolis, Indiana, focusing on race cars and experimental automotive design and production. In 1917, it began building aircraft engines for the Allied war effort and soon switched all its business to aircraft engines rather than automobiles. Acquired by General Motors in 1929 along with several aviation companies, it became the Allison Division in 1934 and was a major supplier of aircraft engines to the Allied forces during World War II. Beginning in the 1970s, it underwent a series of restructurings along with the Allison Transmission Division. In 1983, the aircraft operations were renamed the Allison Gas Turbine Division, which was sold to an investment firm in 1993 and then to Rolls-Royce Aerospace in 1994.
