GM announced Project Saturn, a plan to develop a new family of innovative subcompact cars in the U.S. The project led to the Saturn Corporation, a wholly owned GM subsidiary whose products and dealerships soon became synonymous with "hassle-free" customer service. U.S. President Ronald Reagan was among those briefed on the project.
