Zora Arkus-Duntov testing Chevrolet Corvette SS, 1957

I was there...

I worked in the Test Car Garage (Chevrolet Engineering Center) in the 1950s. I was a clerk on the afternoon shift. Zora Duntov and a mechanic named Ernie Lummus were developing the Corvette fuel injection system in the wash rack next to the office. When at the end of their work for the day Zora came to get the keys for the car he was driving that night. I asked him about his unusual name, ZORA-ARKUS-DUNTOV. He replied "I am One but of Two I come." I never forgot that, don't know why. Maybe it was his accent and his intellectual demeanor. By the way Ernie (the mechanic) was one of few words but the best mechanic I ever knew.
