Ultralite Concept
Submitted by: Jim Haberek
I was part of the Studio team assigned to develop the original Ultralite in the Advance Design Studio at the GM Tech Center. I was the Studio Engineer there and we worked with the Advanced Engineering group to create the interior and exterior Design clay models that would become the finished fiber glass "Show Car" for the Detroit Auto Show. Jim Biek was the Studio chief at that time. Many hours were devoted to that project as we developed a scale model, seating buck and full size clay proposals. My part was to help develop all those properties in the Studio and keep a Design record of the models via a Studio Engineering 'black board' drawing, as they were originally called, while coordinating with Engineering and Design Shop personnel.
As it turned out I was subsequently transferred to the GM Advanced Concepts Center (ACC) in Newbury Park, California and was there when part of the Demolition Man movie was filmed at a location in Thousand Oaks, California. It was quite a thrill to see the vehicles driving around in a 'street scene' while knowing that you had part in the development of the original concept Show Car.
