The Testimony
During my 41 early years at GM, management was kind of distant to the hourly workers. Over time there was a slow change and there were open door meetings with them and the spirit of cooperation seemed to get rolling. Safety, quality and communication seemed to be on everyone's lips. The last few years that I was there I was in the Quality Network as a die room CAC (Capacity Assurance Coordinator). We had meetings for everything.
At one meeting we were introduced to Harry Pearce. He spoke about being a blood marrow donor. He gave a very touching testimony about his experience with it and extended the invitation to us all. Because of this, many of us signed up for the program. We were put into the National Blood Marrow Registry and were told that we may sometime be chosen as candidates. A hat (which I still wear with pride) was given to each of us.
The New Normal: Life After Bone Marrow/StemCell Transplantation, a film recently released by the National Bone Marrow Transplant Link (nbmtLINK), tells the stories of six bone marrow transplant survivors, their families, and caregivers....The idea came from Harry Pearce, the former Vice Chair of General Motors and a transplant survivor....he said that General Motors would make it happen, recalled Myra Jacobs, Executive Director of nbmtLINK. GM underwrote the cost of production and paid for 5,000 free video copies of the 46-minute film for distribution to patients, health professionals, and major transplant centers...."
