The Standard of the World... 1947 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible
Written by Jim McDonald
In the early 1950’s, I was a 10 year old with a dream of being a car stylist one day. My focus was the family car, a 1946 Cadillac Series 61 Sedanet. Not a bad car to start your dreams!
When not drawing cars I was busy washing and waxing that Cadillac.
Fast forward to the mid 1980s and I had a not-so-sudden urge to have a high-styled, standout, collectible convertible. It was easy to explain my fondness for post WWII Cadillacs. Obviously the many wash jobs and hours of hand rubbing left an indelible impression of what styling was all about.
In 1987 my search ended with this 1947 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible.
The overall silhouette of a torpedo…the shape of the pontoon fenders….the convex/concave roll of the bumpers …the detail of the egg-crate grille …the massive chrome fender moldings and the much copied original "sombrero" wheel covers made this car a study in classic styling. My passion for styling became an obsession for authentic restoration. After several years of research and countless hours of labor the car was finished.
It is powered by the standard 346 cubic inch V-8 engine with hydra-matic transmission. Other features include power front windows, power seat, and power antenna, deluxe push-button radio, under seat heater, white side wall tires, deluxe wheel covers and twin spotlights. The car was originally sold by Coulter Cadillac in Phoenix, Arizona and the dealership is still in business today.
The restoration effort has been amply rewarded by not only first place status at the Cadillac LaSalle Grand National and the Classic Car Club of America Grand Classic but also by blue ribbons at the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance and others. All the while, the car has performed beautifully on several thousand mile road trips we’ve taken around the country. The car is truly a dream to drive and a pride to own.
It is the "Standard of the World".
