Some GM Technical Pioneering Efforts
No, this is not turn of the century stuff. Apparently the corporate memory has forgotten 2 pioneering efforts.
The first involves the tremendous efforts GM expended in the 1970's during the various energy crises. A Manufacturing Development Team was formed that developed and implemented a significant effort to conserve energy at GM plants and other building facilities thru the installation of computer based energy monitoring and control systems (many of which included computer based maintenance monitoring and control). Millions of units of energy and dollars were saved by this Herculean task. More details on request.
The second effort was even more significant. GM, in the late 80's and early 90's, led a huge worldwide effort to aid in the creation and implementation of standardized computer communications for plant floor automation applications. Literally hundreds of corporations across the globe participated and it involved thousands of personnel. Multiple development and demonstrations of this technology were held around the world. The effort known as Manufacturing Automation Protocol (MAP) was the pioneering forerunner to the standardized computer communication that exists today. GM led this effort and hundreds of computer systems using this technology were installed across the world.
Some day this effort will be chronicled and preserved for posterity and provide GM the recognition and credit that it so richly deserves. More details on request.
