R.S. Mclaughlin and the Corvair
I was working at GM of Canada in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, during the time that Ralph Nader was attacking the integrity and safety of the Corvair. At that time, Mr. R.S. McLaughlin, the founder of GM of Canada, even though he was in his very late 80s or early 90s, was still being chauffeured to work every day. He would always make a point to take time to say hello to anyone he met and would sometimes still be at work when a lot of the staff had already left for the day. One morning, to everyones suprise, Mr. McLaughin arrived at work being chauffeured in a Corvair. He apparently had gone to the local Chevrolet dealer, the previous evening, and purchased a Corvair and had his chauffeur bring him to work in it. He would park it in front of the administration building, in his parking spot, where everyone would not only see the car, but realize that it was his car. He was determined to show the public that there was nothing wrong with the Corvair and that it was a safe car to drive. It was comical to see the founder of GM of Canada coming to work everyday in his Corvair. He made his point, as this made front page of all the local newspapers.
