People of General Motors
I titled this page "People of General Motors" because that's really what makes GM great .. it's people .. really, it's what makes any corporation great .. the people.
In February, 1968, I was hired into GM as a second level Clerk (I don't believe they have 2nd levels any longer!!)in the GM Central Office, Insurance & Pension Section, 7th floor of the General Motors Building on West Grand Boulevard -- I worked in the GM Bldg until July, 1994 when I went to the GM Tech Center in Warren and was there until April, 2002 when I retired.
GM was at a wonderful place in 1968 and you were proud to say you worked @ GM. People worked very hard and took great pride in their work and there was none of the current mindset of "it's not my job". Quality and perfection were a way of life in Central Office. There were no computers .. we had typwriters (at least electric ones though). Limited copiers -- so all correspondence was done with carbon copies. If a letter had 4 individuals copies, you made 4 carbons. Mistakes were not tolerated .. if you made a typo .. you started over. Everything you did .. you did with great pride.
If one person in the department was overwhelmed with a particular job .. everyone pitched in .. no questions asked .. it was just the way of life. There was true teamwork .. but I don't think the term teamwork was ever used, we just helped each other out when needed because we cared about all of our fellow workers and getting the job done and getting it done right. The people of General Motors cared about one another.
In October, 1968, the Detroit Tigers won the World Series .. what a wonderful time that was .. there were a couple of people that had transistor radios and were listening to the game all while we worked. BUT when the Tigers won the Series, OH MY .. the whole City erupted including the General Motors Building. There wasn't a roll of toilet paper to be found in the building because people were throwing streamers of t.p. out of all the windows (all 15 floors). It was a magical time. **************************** '.... to be continued .. I have many stories .. I ended up working my way to the 14th floor working for the Chief Financial Officer.
