My Years at 'Generous Motors'
Made enough to be able to raise 5 great children: Todd, Jeff, Melissa, Beth, and Lisa on my hourly pay. As well, we sent them to a Christian school. My name is Ronald Cotton. I worked for General Motors for 31 years, from 1965 through 1996, and then retired. I started at the GM Flint Truck Assembly Plant on Van Slyke Rd., then the AC Spark Plug Plant on Dort Hwy (Flint), then got a Tool and Die Apprenticeship at the old "Tank Plant" in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
When my apprenticeship was completed, Uncle Sam drafted me for 2 years of 'Service', in 1970 and 1971. Those two years I made $1100 each year. I was given an early release December 20th, and came back to work before the Christmas Break that year. From that point on, I referred to General Motors as 'Generous Motors', because that was the only way I had any money for Christmas presents that year. I was fortunate school, Faith Baptist School, in Davison, Michigan. All this was made possible by my 'Generous Motors' pay.
When my parents became sick and needed help with their care, I decided to retire to their state of Alabama. My pension enables me to live there, where there are no taxes on my pension and no property taxes when I turn 65.
Thank You Generous Motors and may there be another prosperous 100 GM years!
Ron Cotton
