My First New Car
My first new car was a 1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible. The car was “triple black” with really cool red-line tires. I order the car with a 400 In3 / 360 hp engine and a 4-speed manual transmission. The car was gorgeous and fast. Just right for a young guy and his bride to take on their honeymoon.
It was early September and my new bride and I were heading for Niagara Falls on Canada’s Highway 401. Since it was a warm day we had the top down, naturally. My bride was driving while I was taking a short nap (rough night). When I woke up I sensed we were going pretty fast. In fact we were passing everything on the road. I looked over at the speedometer and saw she was going 100 mph! I said “Honey, why are you driving so fast?” She said “The speed limit is 100, that’s what I’m doing” I said “The speed limit is 100 kilometers per hour, not miles per hour.” She responded “I thought I was passing a lot of cars.” In her defense neither the road signs nor the speedometer had both miles / hour and kilometers / hour graduation and the GTO would go 100 miles per hour (and much more) with breaking a sweat. In fact, it was hard not to go 100! The good news is we didn’t spend the second night of marriage in a Canadian jail.
We kept the GTO for three years and from then on we’ve been driving vans and sedans. More recently, we acquired another muscle car, but we sure would like to have that black GTO convertible back in our garage.
