My First Big Block Ride
It was late 1965 in Signal Hill, California. The new Chevy models had come out and my parents were on the hunt for a new Impala. While viewing all of the new models and colors on the lot that night with the Chevy salesman, another salesman noticed that my attention had been drawn to a car sitting alone in the back. It was a white SS 396 Chevelle - 4 speed with a black interior. I was 15 years old and couldn't drive yet but had always been enamored with cars, and I knew precisely what this was. The second salesman came over to me and asked if I wanted to go for a ride. He turned and asked my parents if he could take me for a ride and they agreed. Signal Hill in 1965 was rather desolate and the salesman definitely wanted to know what this thing was capable of. It was an exhilarating 15 minutes and made a lifetime impression for this car loving kid. It was a simple experience in a simple time. The salesman probably has no idea that this experience stayed with me for the rest of my life.
Eventually I bought a 1967 Chevelle SS 396, and later a 1969 Chevelle SS 396. They were a great source of pride and fun. Street racing was the center of my life for many years. Things have really changed, but the memories stay the same.
