McLaughlin-Buick First Convertible Soft Top
Submitted by Kevin Brown, Kingston Ontario
My great-grandfather "Grandpa Anderson" was apparently the first person to design and invent the convertible soft top for the 1913 McLaughlin-Buick. Is this true? I'm not sure of my grandpa’s first name but, I know his last name was Anderson. I did see a blueprint of this design so I know it's in the family somewhere. From what I hear, Grandpa Anderson was a very talented man and I find it interesting to learn more about my ancestor who worked at GM in Oshawa, Ontario.
I also wish each and everyone at GM good luck during these hard times and hope GM pulls out of this crisis and prospers once again.
Note: One of GM's product experts is under the impression that McLaughlin had convertible tops prior to 1913. In the book "Seventy Years of Buick" by George H. Dammann, there is an image of a 1908 McLaughlin with a convertible top. McLaughlin started making cars in Canada for the 1908 model year. It is possible that Anderson may have been involved with the soft top design for that model year vehicle, but it is doubtful that he designed and invented the first soft top for McLaughlin in 1913.
