Lundin, Oscar A.
Oscar A. Lundin served as vice chairman of the Board of Directors of General Motors Corporation from December 1, 1974, to November 30, 1975, when he retired. As one of two vice chairmen along with Richard L. Terrell, Lundin had responsibility for the Corporation's financial affairs, including the finance and insurance subsidiaries, and the Industry-Government Relations and Public Relations Staffs.
In addition, Lundin was a member of GM's two top policy groups — vice chairman of the Finance Committee and member of the Executive Committee. He also was a member of the Engineering, Industrial Relations and Public Relations, Marketing, Overseas, Personnel Administration and Development, and Research Committees.
Born in Detroit, on November 10, 1910, Lundin attended Detroit schools and the University of Michigan, where he participated in freshman and junior varsity football and was president of Theta XI fraternity. He was graduated with distinction from Michigan with an AB degree in business administration in 1932.
He joined General Motors in the accounting department of the Chevrolet Motor Division Gear and Axle Plant in Detroit in 1933. He served in various supervisory positions with Chevrolet in Detroit and Buffalo, New York, before trans-ferring to the GM Financial Staff in 1938.
Lundin was appointed director of the Procedures and Methods Section in 1948 and director of the Cost Analysis Section a year later. He was named General Auditor in 1952.
In 1954, he was made comptroller of the Allison Division, Indianapolis, Indiana and served in that position until 1960 when he was elected treasurer of the Corporation. He was appointed a director of Motors Insurance Corporation (MIC), a wholly-owned automotive fire, theft, comprehensive and collision damage insurance subsidiary of General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC), in 1962 and a member of its Executive Committee in 1964. Lundin was elected president of GMAC and chairman of the board of MIC in 1966. He moved to New York City in those new assignments.
In November, 1968, Lundin was elected a vice president of General Motors in charge of the Financial Staff and headquartered in New York. On April 6, 1970, he was elected to the GM Board of Directors and served on its Finance Committee and Executive Committee until his retirement.
During his career, Lundin was active in industry and civic affairs. He served as treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the Highway Users Federation; director and member of the Executive Committee of the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association; director of the Automotive Information Council; and member of the Advisory Committee of Northwestern University's Transportation Center.
