Long Lasting Customer
As I was growing up my father was a GM worker. He moved on to become a Salaried employee, leaving the Union behind. Even as an Hourly employee he drove nothing but a GM product. I can remember his new shiny 1968 Chevrolet Bel Air 4-door. I was just becoming of sound enough mind at the age of 8 1/2 years of age to appreciate the beauty of this car. As time passed the vehicles were replaced often, always with another GM product. I can remember them all. All with their own personality and styling, each one a notch above the last, but not demeaning the past one by any degree. The excitement of the change of vehicles was the "hook'" that I had inherited. I was always excited to see the new model arrive. Always gleaming in the sun and imbedding itself in my memory. What a thrill it was.
As I myself grew older, enough to think about my own transportation, my mind never deferred from the values I was taught. Styling, affordability, various option choices, and the vehicles image were to top the list when looking for my first set of wheels. I was able to buy a used 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle. It was a showroom model at Ontario Motor Sales in Oshawa. It was Apple Green with a white convertible top. I was so proud of it. An accident later changed the color and I ended up with high offer to sell it, and I sent it on its way.
The new comer would be a used 1977 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, baby blue 2-door landau. What a luxurious dream car it was. Driving to Toronto every day was a thrill. 350 hp under the hood made me the King of the Road. I started to really enjoy seeing the vehicles on the New Car Lots. After a year of the Monte Carlo I became interested in a new model Firebird. It was 1982 and the first time I saw it I thought it was a Jet airplane inside. I became so into it I had to have one. So I ordered one, in Burgundy with a 4 speed stick. It seemed to take a year to come but when it did, I was so pumped.
Well, from there I changed vehicles every six months for many years. Never really letting go of the one I had just sold, and thoroughly enjoying the new one I had just got. I lost count lately, but the thrill is still like new. I believe I have had coming up to nearly 60 new GM vehicles in my life so far, changing my tastes from cars to trucks part way through. Never straying from the GM brand once. Never doubting the brand and service. Not once feeling shafted by the sale or service of my pride and joy. Show me where you can go today and feel that about any business.
One thing about the automotive business, they know you won’t be back if you are not satisfied. Not once did I flinch, nor will I. The vehicles get more expensive under any brand name as time goes by, yet I feel I still get the most for my money with GM. I have been able, for quite a few years now, to watch as the hundreds of trucks pass by my house every day on their way to the shipping yard. I will truly miss this parade of GMC and Chevrolet trucks when the plant closes, but I hope that this closing opens even more opportunities for more vehicles and jobs for people. I could watch as they passed, selecting my choice of paint color and the tires and the rims. I appreciated the employees that built them, winning awards, it seemed endlessly. The quality was definitely built in from the planning stages all the way up to the last screw.
I would like to thank you all sincerely for building what I have owned and for what I will own in the future. With all the turmoil going on in the Oshawa area currently with the Government and General Motors, I think there is a well deserved "Go General Motors Go" chant for all the hard work that goes into building these vehicles and the support they show in our communities. A good slogan for life is To Reach for the Top and Stay There, like GM has for many years. Thank you so much
