Inflation Control for Air Suspension
I was there - 1956 - 1957 Chevrolet

During the time of 1956 - 1957, Chevrolet was working on a new rear suspension for the 1958 Cherolet model. Previous models had rear leaf springs, and the intent was to provide a smoother vehicle ride. Air springs were engineered for the rear suspension, and did in fact provide the desired "smoother" ride. The air spring control system included an engine driven air compressor. Vehicle development showed that an Inflation Control system was required for the Air Suspension to correctly distribute the air pressure to the respective rear air springs during vehicle cornering.
I was involved in the group of Engineers working on this "Inflation Control for Air Suspension" in the Chevrolet Research & Development Department, under the supervision of Phil Bowser.
Patent No. 2,908,508 was issued on October 13, 1959 for this Inflation Control system.
It was my privilege to work with Messrs. Richard E. Denzer, Maurice Olley, and Robert Schilling on this patent.
The final design of the 1958 Chevrolet model, incorporated rear coil springs on independent rear swing arms, thus creating an equivilant "smooth" vehicle ride and eliminating the need for the Air Springs.
