Imagine the Middle East Without General Motors
When I was asked to participate in the GM 100th Birthday ‘digital storybook’, two thoughts popped into my mind - the “Cars” and the “People” behind those Cars!
Firstly, I want to take a moment to review the real motivating factors that led me to become an Automotive Engineer and the Producer of the first Motoring TV show in the Middle East. My Dad’s Fleetwood Brougham and other iconic cars like Burt Reynolds’ Trans Am were certainly among them, without forgetting the gorgeous and sexy Corvette Stingray that was parked on the left and staring at me every morning as I made my way to school!
Can you imagine how the automotive market of the Middle East would look without the comfortable and reliable Caprice or the solid and muscular Suburban to name but a few? Can you imagine the flamboyant arrival of some of the region’s Presidents and Kings without their Cadillac presidential limousines? Can you imagine the desert without a HUMMER, or a drift meeting without a Lumina SS or a black Z06? Can you imagine the GCC Media and Advertising scene without the creative and invigorative activities of the GM Brands?
It is true GM has built and continues to build great motor cars - indeed now more than ever - but behind every great product we all know there are numerous magical hands and shrewd brains at work. During 17 years of Motoring journalism I have been lucky to meet some of those people behind GM’s tremendous success story and I would like to mention some of those with whom I have dealt throughout the years: Alan Baitey, Maureen Kempston Darkes, Richard Choi, Stew Pierce, Ian Bain, Paul Johnson, Bob Lutz, Ed Welburn, Terry Johnsson, Fadi Ghosn, Samir Homsi, Hisham Khartabil and last but not least Saada Hammad!
I personally could not imagine the Middle East Automotive Industry without General Motors…
