Hughes Electronics
In 1985, GM purchased the Hughes Aircraft Corporation, a world leader in satellite and communications technology, and re-named it GM Hughes Electronics Corporation (GMHE). Under the GM umbrella, GMHE launched the DIRECTV satellite television system. In the 1990s, all GMHE assets were spun off from GM.
