Gilson, Joe
Story submitted by Glen Gilson
My father, Joseph H Gilson, worked for GM Styling for about 30 years - getting his 25 year watch in 1967 (which I still wear occasionally in his memory). He drove a 1957 Chevy Corvette convertible to work everyday from our home in Warren, Michigan. He worked at the Styling Center as a group supervisor and engineer.
I would really like to know more about his position and the projects under his supervision at Styling, but I’m not sure if any records remain. He was very devoted to GM and his job. I know he worked on some convertible top projects and one of these was the development of a "Flush Deck Lid " convertible Cadillac.
If there is any way I could learn more about his work, feel free to add to this article.
Note: When Cadillac designed the 1953 Eldorado Convertible it had a hard tonneau cover that covered the convertible top when it was down. It stuck up a little above the deck lid, but it was significantly smoother than the Series 62 convertible vinyl cover. This was called a Flush Deck Lid and was produced through 1960. Although Cadillac didn't have a completely flush deck lid production car, they did produce some show cars that did. The 1953 LeMans and the 1954 La Espada were a couple of examples.
