Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 1999, General Motors Milford Proving Ground has a rich heritage as the headquarters for GM’s vehicle durability and test operations.
The Proving Grounds were inaugurated in 1924 through the foresight of Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., President of General Motor. The GM Technical Committee voted to spend $300,000 to turn 1,125 acres of farmland outside of Milford, Michigan into vehicle testing roadways and facilities. Prior to this time, all road tests were done on public highways.
By 1999, the Proving Ground site had grown to nearly 4,000 acres, encompassing Livingston and Oakland counties. And, employment grew from Ruggles Simcock, a maintenance superintendent -who was hired as the first employee on August 1924 – to nearly 5,000 team members.
This press kit/booklet was created in celebration of the first proving grounds, Milford Proving Grounds, 75th Anniversary and contains a brief history along with a 22-December 1998 press release about the anniversary.
