GM South Gate, California Plant to GM Hughes
My father, Louis Breitkreutz, went to work at the GM plant in South Gate, California starting after he returned form WWII. He retired about 26 years later, in about 1974. In 1963, I (Wayne Breitkreutz) worked full time for a few weeks on the GM assembly line, doing a different job almost every night filling in for workers that were out sick, etc. until the assembly line shut down for the summer.
In about 1985, GM purchased Hughes Aircraft Company and I found myself working for GM, again. Several bids were made to buy Hughes Aircraft. I think most of us wanted GM to win the bidding. The GM employee discount on cars may have been one factor. GM gave all the southern California Hughes Aircraft employees a free welcome party at Disneyland in Anaheim. GM rented Disneyland every weeknight for about 3 weeks to accommodate all the Hughes employees and our family members, too. Only about 20,000 were in the park each night so all the rides were open. What a great way to welcome us! GM got several times the $5 million they paid for Hughes Aircraft over the later years as GM sold off all of the company in parts.
I retired from GM Hughes in December of 1994 when they sold the division I worked for to Rockwell Collins. Both companies were very good to me, in that GM Hughes and Rockwell Collins agreed to rollover all my years and I retired again with Rockwell Collins in 2006 with about 29 years total. Rockwell Collins did carve out the retirement I got from GM Hughes, so I did not lose anything in retirement.
My father, Louis Breitkreutz, had so many friends from the GM South Gate plant that we have lost track of. Please e-mail Wayne Breitkreutz at spammm@charter.net.
