GM NASCAR Points Championship

Chevrolet won its first NASCAR points championship in 1957 with Buck Baker driving the Bud Moore owned Chevrolet. Since that first championship, Chevrolet has teamed with various drivers and owners to claim 23 points championships through 2007.
On March 26, 1955, Fonty Flock drove a Chevrolet (owned by Frank Christian and powered by the new V-8 engine) to its first Grand National victory at Columbia, South Carolina. This win was followed by a victory in NASCAR's biggest event - the Southern 500 at Darlington South Carolina, with a 1955 Chevrolet factory-sponsored team owned by Smokey Yunick and driven by Herb Thomas.
Oldsmobile won its first NASCAR point’s championship in 1949 with a Rocket 88 driven by Red Byron, followed by 1950, 1958 and 1978 championships. In 1959, Lee Petty won the inaugural Daytona 500 at the new Daytona International Speedway, driving an Oldsmobile.
Buick won its first NASCAR points championship in 1981 with Darrell Waltrip driving for the Junior Johnson owned team. Buick also won the championship in 1982 and 1983. Pontiac won its first NASCAR points championship in 1962 with Joe Weatherly driving for Bud Moore. Pontiac also won the championship in in 1963, 1989, 2000 and 2002.
