GMAC Fifty Seven Years Ago, Stockton, California
I started my career with GMAC on June 1, 1951, following graduation from college. The Stockton, California Branch was opened in 1948 with Mr. Sam Dunmire, as the Purchase Branch Manager under the Control Branch in Oakland, California. The Stockton Branch opened with approximately 4,000 accounts, half of which were DF (diversified financing) accounts consisting of Frigidaire Appliances and miscellaneous furniture. We financed just about anything the dealer sold if he had a Frigidaire Franchise.
My job for the first few years was collections on refrigerators, washers, electric stoves and anything else that Frigidaire made for public use. Our Stockton branch covered five California counties. I was assigned to soliciting GM car dealers and Frigidaire Appliance Dealers. After ten years as a dedicated collector, I was promoted to District Representative and assigned to call on all GM Dealers in our territory to solicit their automobile time business. I was also assigned to collect on some of the tougher customers, as I had a knack for diplomacy.
I served thirty years with GMAC and retired on September 14, 1981. I look back on my GMAC career with fond memories and friendships with every GM dealer in our branch territory.
