Fisher Body 75th Anniversary
Submitted by Walter D. Shoaf
1983 was the year of my 30th anniversary as a Fisher Body Pittsburgh Tool and Die Maker. In that year, I was part of a proud team of Fisher Body Pittsburgh employees who traveled to Michigan for the 75th Fisher Body Anniversary. I met many people that day during the Open House; however, the one who has remained in my mind was the widow of the youngest of the Fisher brothers, who converted the family business from horse drawn coaches to auto bodies.
Shortly after the Fisher Body Open House, General Motors would also celebrate their 75th Anniversary of the beginning of bringing numerous automobile related companies together to form the greatest Corporation in the world. Unfortunately, in the near future GM would make the decision to eliminate the Fisher Body Division and remove the Fisher Body Coach emblem from the door step of every GM automobile. That began the demise of GM, as numerous nameplates began to disappear from the GM network.
Hopefully the next 25 years will see that General Motors Corporation returns to its once proud past.
