First Impressions as a New Employee
Written by Gordon Duda
I've had the pleasure of working for General Motors for 40 years. Why choose GM? As a kid, I spent time cutting out my favorite car pictures from old Motor Trend and Popular Mechanics magazines, including the first generation Corvette.
As a teenager, my Dad took me to my first annual new car show in Toronto, Ontario, in the Fall of 1962. Three cars still impress me with their style and forward thinking. The Chevrolet Corvette split window coupe, the Buick Riviera and the Studebaker Avanti.
When it was time to pick a university and a career, General Motors and GMI seemed like to best choice. In 1967, during my first month as a GMI student in Flint, Michigan, a car hauler drove by with a load of “soon to be unveiled'” new next generation Corvettes. These were 1968 models and were, in my opinion, the most radical and advanced vehicles to get into production. That impression convinced me that GM was the place to be.
My enthusiasm for the company and its products has not diminished. I intend to participate in any organized GMnext car shows and cruises, with the family Corvettes, obtained to match my early and current impressions of great products.
