Family Tradition
My husband, Austin E Haverland, was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941. After his tour of duty he was one of the early ones out of the Air Force in 1945. We were married that year and he started with GM in September of 1945 at the parts facility in Cincinnati, Ohio. He became the parts department foreman and was hurt on the job by a falling crated motor. After 3 months in the hospital and a month or so later, he was transferred to the Chicago parts department, where he became the office manager. After 9 years there he was transferred to the parts division in Newark, New Jersey. He later became a coach sales person, working out of the New York office - covering from New York to Washington D.C. and from Baltimore down through South Carolina. Meantime, our son James went to GMI and worked his shift out of the Newark, New Jersey plant. My husband's superior was Mr. Stokel. My husband retired in 1982. My son, James, is with the Global Group and works out of Warren, Michigan. My husband had 38 years of service with GM and my son has had, so far, 37 years. My grandson David works in the lab with new colors for GM. I would say we are a GM family.
