Early United Motors Service Parts & Service in Newport, R.I.
My name is Horton Edward, My story begins in 1919, when my father opened an auto battery store in Newport, Rhode Island. I believe it was the USL Battery at the time. My dad was only 19 at the time and his partner was William West. It has been my belief that they had opened the second United Motors Store in the country (I'm not sure of the authenticity) of that, but it is what I was led to believe. They only had New Departure bearings and Klaxon horns, I was told. The business was operated successfully for many years until the dealerships were taken away and the large warehouse distributors came into the picture. I later operated the business myself, after working in all facets of the business since I was 12 years of age, and finally retiring and selling in the late 80's.
The only information I can remember from my youth was the name of the United Motors salesman that was in charge of our territory. His name was Mage Anderson, I remember him to be an excellent salesman and a much respected gentleman. We of course sold all of the United Motors products, ordering monthly and semi monthly. Our biggest seller was of course the Delco battery. I do remember that after Mr. Anderson, the next salesman's first name was Alex. (If any one can tell me his last name it would be appreciated). Thank you for this opportunity to reminisce on an era past, but dearly remembered.
