Dutch Door Design
I was there
Submitted by Don Omlie
One day the Chief Designer of the truck studio at Design Staff asked me to look at the tailgate on the GMC Safari and Chevy Astro vans to see what could be done to improve them.
I had felt prior to that time that the frames on the cargo doors on all those models could block your vision from the driver’s seat to vehicles behind them.
After studying the problem, I recommended that the cargo doors be changed to two small dutch doors on the lower portion below the back window and go to a swing up window with glass. Design Staff agreed with that proposal and revised both models. The new design caught on very well and was put into production.
