Christo Datini
Archivist
Biography: Christo Datini serves as lead archivist for the General Motors Media Archive. He has been a member of the Archive team since 2000, and is a specialist in archival administration. Christo is responsible for protecting the physical assets of the Archive by administering preservation standards and monitoring environmental controls, as well as maintaining the integrity of the collection through organizational schemes.
Christo has served in several capacities on the Archive team, including client researcher and video indexer, back when much of the research and index functions required hands-on searches, and before the development of its retrievable database. That knowledge of the history and makeup of each collection is critical to his current responsibilities of the management of the assets.
In addition to his responsibilities with the Media Archive, Christo is currently leading the effort to organize and provide greater access to the artifacts and reference collection of the General Motors Heritage Center. Through his efforts at the Media Archive and Heritage Center, Christo has gained a substantial knowledge of General Motors history. Because of this experience, he is able assist the Media Archive and Heritage Center staffs in fulfilling the many and varied requests for information about General Motors products, services, and history that arrive each day.
Christo holds a master’s in library and information science and a graduate certificate in archival administration from Wayne State University. His undergraduate degree is in history from the University of Michigan. Before working for General Motors, he put his skills as an archivist and researcher to work for the Detroit Institute of Arts and UAW Research Library.
To Christo, the General Motors Media Archive and Heritage Center hold invaluable collections that extend beyond their chronicle of cars, trains and other GM products. The collections offer solid evidence and documentation of a century of American culture, society, and worldwide evolution of technology, industry and commerce.
