Celebrating with GM!
In Brazil, we have a kind of school that prepares boys and girls to work in the industry: during 2 years, they develop skills in mechanical, electronics, science, and computers. After that, they go to the industry to apply what they have learned.
I started working for GMB (General Motors do Brasil) 15 years ago, as an apprentice in mechanical and I was the first girl to work as a mechanic at São José dos Campos (SJC) Plant. At that time, women used to work only in the offices (secretary, for example); it was difficult to see women in the Assembly Line. It was a great opportunity for me, as I was young and GMB helped me to pay for High School, Graduation and Post-Graduation.
Some years later, I forwarded my sister’s resume to Human Resources and she became a GM employee! She has been working in the Material Handling department for 7 years. Now, the GMB-SJC Plant is increasing production and will restart 2nd shift in General Assembly. It was possible to each employee to indicate someone else to participate in the selection and my sister forwarded my cousin’s resume. Today, she started working for General Motors!!! My cousin is the third women of my family to work for GMB and the number of women has been increasing very quickly.
In 2006, I left the SJC Plant to work in São Caetano do Sul Plant: as GMB became a Global Engineering Development Center. I got a new position as a Manufacturing Engineer and I work in the Press & Stamping Center.
I would say that GM is a very good place to work and I hope this is only the first 100 years that GM will celebrate! Happy birthday GM!
