A GM Family
My grandfather has a green 1940 Cadillac LaSalle with beige leather interior. I saw a similar car, that was owned by Eleanor Roosevelt, in an auto museum in Los Angeles a few years ago. As a young boy my memories of this car were driving it on his lap - he making the shifts but really steering. My recollections were that it was heavy to turn, but that might have just been my age (about 5 years old). The best part of that car was the smell of the leather and the bright brass of the connections that allowed the sunroof to open. I would stand on the passengers seat and put my windmill (the ones on a stick with a plastic propeller on them) out the sunroof and enjoy the exaltation of acceleration. My recollection of the car was that is was massive, powerful, solid and largely silent. Grandfather had it from the early 40s until he replaced it with a new 1957 Buick Century with a little notice on it saying it has been certified to have gone 100 miles at 100 miles an hour. It was gray over black leather and was the last car he owned. He would drive from Canada to Florida in it in - about 28 hours no stop.
My family were always “GM people”. My first recollection was that my dad had a 1940 dark blue Buick convertible with spares on the side and dents in virtually every fender. Dad had good taste in cars but was not the best driver! He then had a maroon 1948 Pontiac coupe. I remember the black interior and that it had a visor, which was considered a hot item them. Next was a green 1954 Bel Air, then a two-tone blue Bel Air, a white over red 1962 Chevy Impala convertible, a lagoon aqua 1964 Pontiac Parisienne convertible - yes that was the color. Those convertibles, I thought gave me a lot of cool in these days!
After a few years overseas, Dad returned and bought a 1970 sort of yellow Pontiac hardtop, then a 1972 white Pontiac Parisienne hardtop, then a 1974 rose colored Olds. Ah, the list goes on. While I have been through lots of other things-VWs, MGs, Gremlins, Ford Galaxies and more lately Mercedes-380s, 380 SELs and a wonderful 500 SL, GM cars have always been seen as solid and dependable.
But we all come home. Today, I have a Buick Park Avenue and a Porsche. To be honest, the Buick, although over ten years old is the preferred car for a long trip.
General Motors I love you, you are part of my family heritage.
