2007 Chevrolet Corvette Indy Pace Car Coupe
Personal story and photograph submitted by owners Larry & Donna Boyd - courtesy of the National Corvette Museum website - for participation in the National Corvette Museum 2008 Historic Motorama II.
Larry - I purchased my first Corvette in the fall of 1965; it was a 1966 Blue Coupe. Next was a 1969 Blue Coupe, a 1965 Blue Coupe Autocross car, then a 1977 Blue Coupe.
Donna - I purchased my first Corvette a 1973 Red Coupe in 1973. My second Corvette was a 1960 White Hardtop purchased from a fellow Corvette club member. I couldn't drive it at the time because I had never learned to shift. I just wanted it because it was beautiful. By the way it was in the Indianapolis 500 Parade in 1978, the first year Corvette was the Pace Car. They featured one of each year Corvette in a display sponsored by Chevrolet.
We met in the Glass Menagerie Corvette Club in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1974 and were married in July 1978. At the time we each owned two Corvettes. Since then we have owned a 1978 Pace Car, 1979 Blue Coupe, 1967 White Convertible, 1982 Two-tone Blue Coupe, and 2002 Electron Blue Coupe which was a Museum Delivery. Our current Corvette is a beautiful Atomic Orange 2007 Indy Pace Car.
We have had a passion for the National Corvette Museum (NCM) since its beginning. Larry wrote a model column for several years in the Corvette magazine Keepin' Track. The literature columnist was Dan Gale. We met Dan at the National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS} Winter Swap Meet in Florida in January 1990. We listened to the idea about a Corvette Museum and thought it was great, we signed up as Founding Members at that meet. The following year when they first offered Lifetime Membership we upgraded, we have Lifetime Membership #3.
We enjoy attending Museum events. We were at the Grand Opening of the Museum in 1994 and have attended all except one of the Labor Day Celebrations since. We have also been to many C5/C6 Birthday Bashes and several ocean cruises. We were lucky to attend the DEI Legends Tour and Performance Tour II. We were also the Southern Ohio Co-Captains for the 50th Anniversary Caravan. We are looking forward to the Historic Motorama II Tour.
We are currently NCM Ambassadors for the Cypress Gardens Corvette Club and Larry is Club Governor in the National Council of Corvette Clubs (NCCC). We are also members of the C5/C6 Registry and the Chevrolet Corvette Pace Car Registry. We are retired and live in Florida, where we can enjoy our Corvette year around.
When GM celebrates the beginning of its next 100 years on September 16, 2008, 55 Corvettes will be on display outside its World Headquarters at Detroit’s Renaissance Center. The Corvettes are in fact the Historic Motorama II, a caravan from the National Corvette Museum (NCM) which is comprised of one example from each of the 55 years of Corvette production. The caravan will depart from the National Corvette Museum on September 10th with stops along the way. People attending the GMnext Day activities on September 16th will be able to view the Corvettes before and after the official program.
Look at the next Historic Motorama II Corvette participant, representing a cross-section of Corvette enthusiasts from across the country.
