When the Opel Astra was redesigned for 2004 it got rave reviews and American media outlets wondered why it wouldn't be made available in the United States. Two years later, GM announced that it cancelled development of an American-made car to replace the Saturn ION. Speculation started that the Astra would come to America to fill the ION's shoes. By summer 2006, it was official and the media got to see the U.S. version of the Astra that fall. GM Vice Chairman of Global Product Development Bob Lutz said that bringing the Astra to America cost only $100 million instead of about $1 billion to develop a new model exclusively for the U.S. The Saturn Astra went on sale in January 2008 as an economical XE 5-door and sporty XR 3-door and and 5-door. Saturn dealers sold 11,968 Astras through the end of 2008.
