2004 was the last year for the C5 Corvette generation that began with the 1997 model year. Of the 34,064 Corvettes manufactured for 2004, only 2,659 were LeMans Commemorative Edition convertibles. The total 6-speed manual transmission production in 2004 for the Corvette was 6,928. It was also the last year for the hidden head lights, part of Corvette’s signature styling since 1963.
This vehicle was autographed by Corvette Chief Engineer Dave Hill, at his official General Motors retirement party on January 26th 2006, held at the Venetian Banquet Center in Madison Heights, Michigan. It was displayed in front of the building alongside other GM vehicles Dave had engineering responsibilities for including the Cadillac Cimarron, Cadillac Allante, Corvette C5 Z06, Cadillac XLR, Corvette C6 and finally the C6-Z06. Dave took the helm at the beginning of 1993 when the very existence of Corvette was threatened and is now credited by many with transforming the Corvette into a world-class sports car. Guest speakers that evening included Plant Manager of the Corvette Bowling Green Assembly operations, Will Cooksey, Tom Stephens, GM’s Vice President of Powertrain and GM’s Vice Chairman of Global Product Development, Bob Lutz. Concealed under the convertible’s tonneau cover it reads: “Miles of Smiles” David C. Hill.
GM’s Century Cruise pays tribute to GM’s past and the passion owners have for their vehicles. On Saturday, August 16, 2008 this vehicle and more than 100 other classic GM vehicles will cruise from the GM Global Headquarters at the Renaissance Center up Woodward Avenue to the heart of the Woodward Dream Cruise in Royal Oak and the surrounding suburbs. One of these vehicles will be crowned “top cruiser” based on a text voting campaign.
