1998 Chevrolet Corvette Indy Pace Car Convertible
Personal story and photograph submitted by owners Jerry & Bev Kohn - courtesy of the National Corvette Museum website - for participation in the National Corvette Museum 2008 Historic Motorama II.
Our '98 Pace Car has been with us since March of 1998. It is the first Corvette that we actually ordered new from Chevrolet. We were excited to be able to go to the Corvette plant and watch it being built. We were really surprised when we were actually allowed to take part in the assembly of our new Corvette. We assisted in marrying the body to the chassis, attached two of the bright yellow wheels to the chassis. Jerry put the very first gallon of gas in the tank and was also the first person to actually start the car. We have also driven the car around the Indy 500 track. Now that was fun! Currently the odometer reads 2704.
The unusually bright color scheme never fails to turn heads even though not everyone loves it like we do. Since that first summer it has spent most of its life garaged alongside our '78, '86, & '95 Corvette Pace cars. It has graced the cover of a Corvette Central catalog and is used annually to parade our local high school's homecoming queen candidates around the football field. It is our pleasure to participate in the Historic Motorama II as the National Corvette Museum joins in the celebration of GM's first 100 years .
When GM celebrates the beginning of its next 100 years on September 16, 2008, 55 Corvettes will be on display outside its World Headquarters at Detroit’s Renaissance Center. The Corvettes are in fact the Historic Motorama II, a caravan from the National Corvette Museum (NCM) which is comprised of one example from each of the 55 years of Corvette production. The caravan will depart from the National Corvette Museum on September 10th with stops along the way. People attending the GMnext Day activities on September 16th will be able to view the Corvettes before and after the official program.
