1988 ZR-1 Prototypes
In 1988 GM built 25 1988 ZR-1 prototypes - 24 coupes and 1 convertible. These were built on the 1987 production line in the May - August time frame and had Phase 2 LT-5 engines. These engines were built in England by Lotus and used simplex timing chains, which were prone to breaking. The vin tags in the dash were hand stamped EX50XX.
These prototypes were true ZR-1s with wide body and wheels, except for the convertible, since there were no convertible wide quarter panels made. The cars lead the way to what would become the production ZR-1 in 1990.
