1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28

The reason behind my passion for my 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28 dates back to even before it was decided by GM to make a street version of the Camaro cars that raced at the International Race Of Champions (IROC).
I can remember when I was a teenager watching the IROC races on a Sunday afternoon on Channel 7. I enjoyed watching the races because they tested the drivers’ skill. These Camaros were cars that were supplied to the drivers as equally prepared vehicles and randomly mated to its driver for the races. This was done to try to take the vehicle out of the equation of who will win the race.
I remember picking up a copy of Road and Track in the spring of 1985 and finding a yellow 1985 IROC Z28 on the cover. The magazine said that General Motors was going to build the IROC Z28 as a street version of the cars that were the heartbeat of the races. I knew as soon as I read the article that I had to own one. I can remember telling my friend right then and there, I was going to get me one.
GM’s Century Cruise pays tribute to GM’s past and the passion owners have for their vehicles. On Saturday, August 16, 2008 this vehicle and more than 100 other classic GM vehicles will cruise from the GM Global Headquarters at the Renaissance Center up Woodward Avenue to the heart of the Woodward Dream Cruise in Royal Oak and the surrounding suburbs. One of these vehicles will be crowned “top cruiser” based on a text voting campaign.
