GM and Toyota signed a landmark joint venture agreement creating New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI), to produce small cars at an assembly plant in Fremont, California, that had been previously been operated by GM alone. NUMMI soon became a learning laboratory for both companies.

NUMMI's first vehicle was the Chevrolet Nova. The Nova was based on the Toyota Corolla platform and used sheet metal from the Toyota Sprinter, which was not sold in the U.S. Novas also had unique-to-America grilles and interior trimmings and carried GM Delco radios.
Novas were first made available in midwestern states in mid-1985 and went on sale nationally less than a year later.
Nova quickly gained a reputation for quality and customer satisfaction and, to this day, cars built at NUMMI rank highly in reliability surveys.
