1981, First Application of V8 Cylinder De-Activation for Fuel Economy
Two solenoids were mounted on each cylinder head and attached to the appropriate rocker arms, such that they would disable the intake valve when energized. This prevented the selected cylinders from taking on a new air/fuel charge, thus allowing the remaining active cylinders to operate at a higher manifold pressure, higher pumping efficiency, overall improved thermal efficiency and ultimately better fuel economy.
The digital microprocessor was programmed to de-activate cylinders based upon light load steady driving conditions. Under steady road load conditions either two or four cylinders were de-activated. As soon as the driver accelerated, the cylinders were immediately re-activated for full performance capability.
