1980, First Closed Loop Exhaust Sensing Digital Engine Control (EFI)
This was the first application of a microprocessor programmed closed loop air/fuel managed engine control. The Cadillac V8 dual bore throttle body fuel injection system with its digital computer system monitored the input from exhaust mounted oxygen sensors and adjusted the air/fuel ratio so as to enable the efficient performance of an emission lowering oxidizing and reducing exhaust catalytic converter.
As experience was gained with the exhaust sensing closed loop technology, it would soon become the industry standard for exhaust emission control.
