1979, First Electronic Fuel Injection (Throttle Body type)

This initial application of digital electronic twin-bore throttle body fuel injection (EFI, also called TBI) on the Cadillac Seville replaced the carburetor. A key motivation for the change from carburetion to fuel injection was to provide improved driveability over the wide range of conditions that exist for the automotive environment: including temperature, altitude, humidity and vehicle accelerations/decelerations. Carburetors contained a number of individually calibrated fuel metering circuits, all sensitive to small changes in differential pressure, fuel properties and contaminants.

A fuel injector, on the other hand, employed a single metering orifice operating at a relatively high fuel pressure, not influenced by small venture pressure drops. Thus, EFI in concert with its sensors and digital microprocessor controller delivered more consistent fuel to the engine under the vehicle’s wide range of operating conditions. With EFI, driveability stumbles disappeared. Rochester Products, supported by the former Diesel Equipment Div., provided the fuel injection unit; AC Spark Plug the fuel pump; Delco Electronics the digital microprocessor based controller and Packard Electric the wiring harness. Delco Systems Operations, part of Delco Electronics in Goleta, CA (former GM Defense Research Laboratories) supported the first production software development.
