Personal story and photograph submitted by owner Dave Miller - courtesy of the National Corvette Museum website - for participation in the National Corvette Museum 2008 Historic Motorama II.

I'm the original owner of a '68 Corvette convertible. I bought the '68 Vette from my uncle in Crookston, Minnesota, Brost Chevrolet. It was on order for 16 weeks, and I took delivery in mid-August. One of the bumpers still wears the scar it received when shipped from the factory, but the string that was in the left front fender is gone, having been washed, polished, and waxed out of existence years ago. The mark is still in the paint.

As the original owner, I have paperwork back to the first oil change. The '68 spent its first 4 years in Minneapolis, with a summer in Albuquerque, then 2 years in New Jersey, and since 1974, it has lived with me and my family in Naperville, Illinois. It has been driven between all these locations, and it visited the factory in Bowling Green for the homecoming in 1988.

The '68 is not a trailer queen. It has only been on a flatbed twice, and then there was the time in December, 1968, when it was winched out of two feet of snow and back onto the road in southern Minnesota. In 1992, it went to Bloomington Gold for the first of many times. It was judged a 4 category survivor, and very little has changed since then. In the associated photo, you can see the Survivor sticker still on the windshield. By the way, the '68, my Corvette pal Paul, and I led the Survivor road trip. The '68 has about 63,000 miles and is in excellent condition. I've been asked if it has clear coat on it. No, just 39+ years of washing, polishing, and waxing.

Some specifics about the car: Lemans blue with a black top and black interior, 350 HP, 327 CI, close ratio 4 speed, and 370 gears with positraction. It is riding on white stripe tires, just like I ordered back in 1968. Last October, my wife and I drove it on a 500 mile trip to La Crosse, Wisconsin, for the annual Fall Color Run.

When GM celebrates the beginning of its next 100 years on September 16, 2008, 55 Corvettes will be on display outside its World Headquarters at Detroit’s Renaissance Center. The Corvettes are in fact the Historic Motorama II, a caravan from the National Corvette Museum (NCM) which is comprised of one example from each of the 55 years of Corvette production. The caravan will depart from the National Corvette Museum on September 10th with stops along the way. People attending the GMnext Day activities on September 16th will be able to view the Corvettes before and after the official program.
