MY PASSION FOR GM AND MY 1966 CHEVROLET CORVETTE
My Dad was an employee of General Motors, so I grew up with an intimate knowledge of the company, and knew I also wanted to become an employee of GM one day.
In 1953, my Dad took me to the Detroit Auto Show, which is where I saw my first 1953 Chevrolet Corvette. I knew at that time I would own a Corvette some day, and kept up with the latest designs via my Hot Rod magazines.
Fast forward to 1965. I had just graduated from college and in September of that year, was able to order my Corvette. The car I ordered was Laguna Blue coupe, with a 427 Turbojet, and 425 horse power. A teak steering wheel, power windows and a power antenna rounded out my perfect car. I was hired by GM on December 1,1965, in the engine Dynamometer area and picked up my "Vette" on December 21, 1965. It was a very good year. I began driving the Vette daily, but knew it was a special car, and eventually was able to buy a commuter vehicle and only drive the Corvette when it was a nice day.
When I had my house built in 1976,1 had the choice of a larger kitchen or a spot in the garage for the Corvette. Since I was not married, the Corvette won!
My 1966 Chevrolet Corvette still has the original exhaust, and currently has 22,000 miles on it. I have the Bill of Sale and the window sticker. My wife and I take the car to neighborhood shows, and both of us really enjoy the camaraderie at the yearly GM Tech Center Employee Car Show, and Dream Cruise.
One of the strangest things is that I can remember when I purchased my 1966 Vette, but, much to my wife's dismay, can't for the life of me remember our wedding anniversary!
GM’s Century Cruise pays tribute to GM’s past and the passion owners have for their vehicles. On Saturday, August 16, 2008 this vehicle and more than 100 other classic GM vehicles will cruise from the GM Global Headquarters at the Renaissance Center up Woodward Avenue to the heart of the Woodward Dream Cruise in Royal Oak and the surrounding suburbs. One of these vehicles will be crowned “top cruiser” based on a text voting campaign.
