Our story begins "1962" in Melvindale, Michigan. I was a senior at Melvindale High School. Since Melvindale is a small city, it wasn't hard to spot a Roman Red, 1962 Chevy Impala SS with a cute red headed girl behind the steering wheel. Lo and Behold, this girl was also a senior at Melvindale High. I'm not sure which I was more impressed with, the girl or the car. As a teenager, I'm betting it was the car that called my attention to Stop and Look. (Shh, don't tell).
We started dating, which meant I had a chance to drive the car on several dates. Gosh, what a car. To add to the perfect picture, my name is Bob and hers is Carol. The songs I Want To Be Bobby's Girl and I'll Remember Carol were the top hits. Needless to say, we owned both songs on a 45-rpm record, and the radio turned up super loud when they came on, as we cruised around town. I was feeling really important with my red headed girl and the Roman Red Car. We graduated in June 1963 and married, October 1963. Yep, we went on our honeymoon in the 1962 Chevy Impala SS. Lots of memories and miles go back to that 1962 GM product.
Two years ago I found a 1962 Chevy Impala just like the one we had when we first got married. I traveled to Missouri with my grandson to buy it and surprise my wife. I ordered a license plate for the front that says: "Bobby's Girl." You guessed it, when I pulled up in the driveway to show my wife, I had the song "Bobby's Girl" playing. The look on her face was worth it all. We may not look like we did 45 years ago, but the Chevy SS still looks exactly like the one we started our married life together with. Including the original seat belts.
I guess you could say we owe our marriage to GM, since that is what got my attention to start with. After all, Red does mean Stop. Look and Listen. doesn't it! Good Job GM.....
