1960 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
Personal story and photograph submitted by owners David & Liz Borden - courtesy of the National Corvette Museum website - for participation in the National Corvette Museum 2008 Historic Motorama II.
We are David and Liz Borden; married for 44 years in December, we have 3 children and 10 Corvettes. David is a retired Civil Engineer/Surveyor and I am a housewife, co-owner manager of a mobile home park and storage facility. We have lived all our married life in Winchester, Ky except for 1 year when we lived in North Pole, Alaska. David was a Project Engineer on the Alaska Oil Pipeline.
We have been NCM Lifetime Members #619 since 1992. David ordered his 1960 Corvette from Baron Chevrolet in Weirton, West Virginia (just across the river from his hometown of Steubenville, Ohio) in October of 1959. Due to an autoworkers strike, the car was not built until December 30, 1959 (#2010). He took delivery of the Corvette in January 1960. David graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1960 and the Corvette was a graduation present to himself. He drove the 1960 to California where he received his Masters Degree from Stanford University. The car has 45,000 miles on the odometer. The Corvette has never been restored and is very original. The spare tire still has it's original St. Louis air! It was ordered with the 270 HP engine (2x4 carburetors), 4 speed transmission, 4:11 positraction rear end, and both a white convertible top and hard top. The color is Honduras Maroon (first year for this color) with a white cove. Our other Corvettes are:
- a 50th Anniversary Coupe that we won from the Museum Raffle during the 50th Anniversary Celebration; our vanity plate is 1RAFFL.
- We have a restored 1957 Black/Silver cove and red interior that we displayed last year at the National Corvete Museum during the Lucky 7 display. We also took the '57 to Bloomington Gold for the 50th Celebration.
- Our 1962 Corvette is a former drag car that is now street driven with a 406 small block.
- We have a 1963 split window that is under construction.
- Our 1973 Medium Blue Corvette coupe is a 454 4 speed.
- David surprised me with a 1990 Dark Red Metallic Convertible/hardtop that the first trip in it was to Bowling Green for a Corvette event. He liked my '90 so well that he found a Polo Green ZR-1 Coupe for himself.
- The 2000 Light Pewter Metallic Convertible with Magnesium Wheels is one of my favorites because I chose the color and wheels.
- Our most recent and last Corvette is a Black/black 2006 Z06 that we got because a doctor changed his mind when the car came into the dealership and we were next in line before Eddie Montgomery of Montgomery Gentry.
We are looking forward to the Motorama and meeting all of you all.
When GM celebrates the beginning of its next 100 years on September 16, 2008, 55 Corvettes will be on display outside its World Headquarters at Detroit’s Renaissance Center. The Corvettes are in fact the Historic Motorama II, a caravan from the National Corvette Museum (NCM) which is comprised of one example from each of the 55 years of Corvette production. The caravan will depart from the National Corvette Museum on September 10th with stops along the way. People attending the GMnext Day activities on September 16th will be able to view the Corvettes before and after the official program.
Look at the next Historic Motorama II Corvette participant, representing a cross-section of Corvette enthusiasts from across the country.
