1959 Chevrolet Bel Air
Personal story and photograph submitted by owner Russell Fuller

My passion started in 1967 when I purchased my first car, at the age of 15. It was a beautiful '59 Bel Air 2 door post car, Cameo Coral, with a 6 cyclinder stick.(My Dad wouldn't let me have a V-8).
An experience of a lifetime for the next year rebuilding the '59 so it would be ready for me to drive when I got my drivers license. I drove the car all through high school, it was truly my first love. My plans were to keep the car forever, but in July of 1970 it was involved a very serious accident. My Chevy was gone forever.
After working more than 36 years for GM, and retiring from Corvette Bowling Green Assembly, I finally finished building my current '59 Bel Air. I built my new '59 with some more modern features like a 350 V-8 (Dad said its o.k.), 700R4 trans., power disc brakes, power steering, red & white tuck-n-rolled interior, and my favorite color, Corvette Torch Red.
My wife and I are having a ball enjoying our '59, and I will keep it forever!!!
GM’s Century Cruise pays tribute to GM’s past and the passion owners have for their vehicles. On Saturday, August 16, 2008 this vehicle and more than 100 other classic GM vehicles will cruise from the GM Global Headquarters at the Renaissance Center up Woodward Avenue to the heart of the Woodward Dream Cruise in Royal Oak and the surrounding suburbs. One of these vehicles will be crowned “top cruiser” based on a text voting campaign.
