1956 Pontiac Star Chief
Personal story and photograph submitted by owner Richard Lieblein

I purchased my Pontiac Star Chief because it was from the '50s and because it was unusual. I find all GM vehicles from the '50s very interesting, but wanted one that was unique. There are not a lot of old Pontiacs around and this beautiful 2 door hardtop caught my eye. I love the wide open look of the hardtops and all of that chrome! The other idea that made this the car for me was the fact that it was destined for the crusher or at best, it would be modified as a hotrod.
Restoring one of these "time capsules" is like preserving history. They tell you about the values of the time, the state of technology and the styles that influenced our society. This restoration project has taken me 7 years, and I am not done yet, because I am doing most of the work myself. When it is finished, I will find another '50s GM vehicle and start the whole wonderful process over again.
GM’s Century Cruise pays tribute to GM’s past and the passion owners have for their vehicles. On Saturday, August 16, 2008 this vehicle and more than 100 other classic GM vehicles will cruise from the GM Global Headquarters at the Renaissance Center up Woodward Avenue to the heart of the Woodward Dream Cruise in Royal Oak and the surrounding suburbs. One of these vehicles will be crowned “top cruiser” based on a text voting campaign.
