1953 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
Personal story and photograph submitted by owner John Aunspaw - courtesy of the National Corvette Museum website - for participation in the National Corvette Museum 2008 Historic Motorama II.
I have owned several Corvettes but now I am down to the '53. I found the '53 in an ad in the newspaper, which I promptly answered. I received a phone call to be at a certain place and time on a certain day and I had one hour to look over the car. I made a bid on the car and it was accepted. I forgot to mention, while we were looking at the car our son was also looking at a car. At two years old, he was already a Corvette “man”, he found a 1968 Rupp Corvette go cart. I landed up buying two Corvettes instead of one.
The car was in need of a full restoration. During restoration, my friend's body shop was robbed and they used my corvette to step on to get tools and equipment into the “get away” vehicle. They obviously didn't know what they were stepping on, the body was worth much more than the tools.
That was 31 years ago, the restoration was completed and my wife and I thoroughly enjoy the car.
When GM celebrates the beginning of its next 100 years on September 16, 2008, 55 Corvettes will be on display outside its World Headquarters at Detroit’s Renaissance Center. The Corvettes are in fact the Historic Motorama II, a caravan from the National Corvette Museum (NCM) which is comprised of one example from each of the 55 years of Corvette production. The caravan will depart from the National Corvette Museum on September 10th with stops along the way. People attending the GMnext Day activities on September 16th will be able to view the Corvettes before and after the official program.
